A Tragedy That Should Never Have Happened

Dakota Levi Stevens was just 10 years old. In April 2024, he ran from his foster home to a neighbor’s house, desperately asking to be adopted—seeking safety, care, and a life where he could feel protected.

What followed turned into a tragedy that shook all of Indiana. When his foster mother, Jennifer Lee Wilson, returned him home, an attempt to restrain him ended in disaster. Jennifer, weighing 154 kilos, sat on Dakota for several minutes. By the time help arrived, it was too late. Two days later, he passed away in the hospital.

Months later, Jennifer pleaded guilty and received a sentence of only five years in prison and one year of probation for involuntary manslaughter.

The heartbreak lies in the fact that Dakota reached out for help moments before his life ended—and still, no one could save him. His story is a painful reminder of the vulnerability of children in foster care and the urgent need for vigilance, accountability, and compassion in protecting them.

🕊️ Let’s hold space for Dakota’s memory and advocate for the safety of every child who cannot speak for themselves.
