From Shore to Science: Blue Whale Becomes a Permanent Educational Exhibit in Oregon

A 70-foot blue whale that washed ashore in Oregon in 2015 is being given a new scientific purpose, as its remains are transformed into a permanent educational exhibit at the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center.

Rather than being left as a historical stranding event, the whale has been carefully preserved and prepared for display to support marine science education and research. The project is designed to give students, researchers, and visitors a rare opportunity to study one of the ocean’s largest species up close, offering direct insight into marine biology and ecosystem dynamics.
Officials involved in the project say the exhibit aims to turn a tragic natural event into a long-term educational resource. By examining the whale’s structure and biology, scientists hope to deepen public understanding of blue whales and broader ocean health.
In addition to the exhibit itself, parts of the installation and preparation process are being livestreamed, allowing the public to observe how scientific preservation work is carried out. The initiative has been praised as an innovative way to connect education, research, and public engagement in real time.
