Kris and Paul: A Love That Time Never Broke

Thirty years ago, at a simple dance, Kris noticed Paul across the room. In that ordinary moment of music and movement, something extraordinary happened — she felt an instant connection, as if she already knew where her heart was meant to go.
Both Kris and Paul have Down syndrome. At the time, their relationship was met with doubt and misunderstanding from the world around them. Many questioned whether they should be together, and even more questioned whether they should be allowed to marry at all. But love does not wait for permission.
Kris and Paul stood by each other and fought for their right to build a life together. Against hesitation and resistance, they proved that their bond was real, meaningful, and deeply human. Eventually, they won that right — and they got married.
From that point on, they built a life defined not by limitations, but by shared joy.
For 25 years, they created a world of simple but powerful happiness. They danced together, bowled on weekends, cooked meals side by side, and supported each other through everyday routines that most people take for granted. Their life was not about grand achievements, but about presence — always choosing each other, every day. Kris often took the lead in planning their routines and guiding their days, while Paul became her steady source of strength and comfort. Together, they formed a partnership built on trust, familiarity, and unconditional care.
Now, as they enter their 50s, their journey has taken a difficult turn.
Paul is now battling dementia and has been admitted to intensive care. His condition has made daily life increasingly fragile and uncertain. At the same time, Kris is also facing her own health challenges, living with type 1 diabetes, requiring constant management and care. Because of their medical situations, they are currently separated for treatment and safety reasons.
Even so, Kris continues to visit him whenever she can. And in moments that feel almost miraculous, Paul still recognizes her — a reminder that somewhere within the confusion of illness, their connection remains intact.
Their story today is not only about love in the past, but love that continues to exist even in the hardest present.
It is about two people who built a lifetime together, and still hold onto each other — even when everything else is uncertain.
Please keep Kris and Paul in your thoughts and prayers as they continue this journey, hoping for comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead.
