She Saved Them First

When the fire broke out in a three-story building in Mandaue City, Cebu, panic spread quickly.

Thick smoke poured from the lower floors, climbing higher by the second. People shouted from below, urging everyone to get out as fast as possible. Time was running out.

On the third-floor balcony stood Ei Mei Lee Maningo.

Surrounded by smoke, with danger closing in, she had a choice to make.

But she didn’t think of herself first.

In her arms were her two dogs—frightened, trembling, completely dependent on her. While voices from the ground begged her to hurry down, she stayed where she was, listening carefully to the firefighters below.

Then, one by one… she made the hardest decision.

Holding her breath, she gently tossed each dog down into the waiting arms of rescuers and bystanders. It was a terrifying moment—one that made everyone watching gasp—but it was their only chance.

And it worked.

Both dogs were caught safely.

Only after knowing they were out of danger did she turn to save herself—climbing down a fire truck ladder as smoke continued to rise behind her.

The fire, believed to have started from an electrical source, was eventually contained. The building suffered heavy damage, but miraculously, no lives were lost.

And at the center of it all was a simple, powerful choice.

She didn’t run first.
She didn’t leave them behind.

She saved them.

Her bravery touched people everywhere, earning her recognition, support, and the title many now call her—a true “furmom hero.”

Because in a moment where fear could have taken over…
she chose love instead.
