A Rescue in Rising Floodwaters

As floodwaters slowly rose across the area, danger was spreading quickly.

Photographer Ruaridh Connellan was documenting the situation when he suddenly noticed something that stopped him in his tracks.

A frightened dog was trapped.

The poor animal had been tied up and left behind as the water continued to rise. With no way to escape, she stood trembling in the shallow but dangerous floodwater, clearly terrified and unable to free herself.

Without hesitation, Connellan stepped into the water.

Carefully wading through the rising flood, he made his way toward the scared dog, speaking softly to calm her as he approached. The water wasn’t deep, but it was unpredictable and moving quickly.

Still, he didn’t stop.

When he finally reached her, he gently untied the rope that had been holding her in place. The moment she was free, he guided the frightened dog toward higher ground where she would be safe from the flood.

Just in time.

Later, the rescued dog was given a new name: Lucky.

And the name fit perfectly.

Once she realized she was safe, Lucky’s fear slowly faded. Her tail began to wag as she ran toward the dry land ahead, almost as if she understood that she had been given a second chance at life.

But Connellan didn’t forget about her.

The very next day, he returned to the area bringing food and fresh water to check on Lucky and make sure she was still safe. He also contacted local animal control to alert them about other animals that might have been abandoned during the flooding.

What could have ended in tragedy became something very different.

A powerful reminder that sometimes all it takes is one person—one moment of courage and compassion—to save a life.
