Without hesitation, Finn leapt between his handler and the attacker, placing himself directly in the path of the knife.

The wound was devastating—just inches from his heart. Blood poured from his body, yet even while gravely injured, Finn refused to release the suspect. With incredible determination, he held the attacker in place until backup officers arrived.

Miraculously, Finn survived after emergency veterinary care. But the shocking attack revealed something troubling: under the law at the time, service animals like Finn were not fully protected from serious harm.

Inspired by Finn’s courage and sacrifice, people across the country demanded change. Their voices led to a historic moment in 2019 with the passing of Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Act 2019, widely known as Finn’s Law.

The legislation strengthened legal protections for police dogs, horses, and other service animals, ensuring those who harm them face stronger consequences.

Finn eventually retired and later passed away, but his legacy lives on far beyond that night. Every service animal now protected by the law carries a piece of his story.
