“Six Hours of Love: A Mother’s Goodbye to Her Baby Girl Who Never Got the Chance to Live”

There are moments in life that no parent is ever prepared for—moments where joy, hope, and love are suddenly replaced by devastating truth.
Justine Zampogna was overjoyed when she learned she was expecting her second child. After welcoming her son Chase, she and her husband dreamed of growing their family again. They even chose a name for their unborn daughter—Gia, meaning “gift from God.”
At first, everything seemed normal. But during a routine scan at 14 weeks, their world collapsed. Doctors discovered that their baby had anencephaly, a rare and fatal condition where the brain fails to develop properly. It meant that even if Gia survived to birth, she would only live for a few hours.
The couple was faced with an unbearable decision: continue the pregnancy knowing the outcome, or end it early. After days of heartbreak and reflection, Justine chose to carry her daughter long enough to say goodbye.
In the days that followed, she prepared for a birth that was also a farewell. Every moment was filled with emotional weight—love, grief, and the painful awareness of what was coming.
On August 27, 2018, Justine gave birth to her daughter, Gigi. For six precious hours, she and her husband held their baby girl, speaking softly to her, memorizing every detail, and surrounding her with love.
“She was only here for a short time, but she changed me forever,” Justine later shared. Instead of keeping her grief hidden, Justine chose to speak openly about it. She shared her story to break the silence around pregnancy loss and to remind others that every baby—no matter how brief their life—is deeply loved and deeply real.
Through heartbreak, she found purpose: to help other grieving parents feel less alone, and to show that even in the deepest sorrow, love still exists. 💔
