“You’re Safe Now, Little One”

The ground was still warm from the fire when Liam stepped into the burned creek bed. Ash covered everything. The air was heavy, silent—until he heard it.
A faint, fragile gasp.
He followed the sound and found a tiny kangaroo joey, alone and trembling. Its body was weak, its breaths shallow. Somewhere in the chaos of the flames, it had lost the one place it belonged—its mother.
Without thinking, Liam dropped to his knees.

Gently, he scooped the joey into his arms, holding it close as if it might slip away at any moment. He wrapped it in a soft blanket, trying to shield it from the cold and the fear that still lingered.
“Easy… little one,” he whispered.
The joey shivered against him at first, its small body tense with shock. But slowly… something changed.
Its breathing softened.
Its body relaxed.
It leaned into the warmth.
And Liam stayed.
He didn’t rush. He didn’t move away. In that quiet, broken place, he simply held on—offering comfort, safety, and the presence of someone who cared.
“You’re safe now,” he murmured, more to reassure the joey… and maybe himself.

When the veterinary team finally arrived, Liam gently handed the tiny survivor over. But even then, it was hard to let go.
Because in that brief moment, something real had formed.
A connection.
A trust.
A life touched.
And as he watched them carry the joey to safety, Liam knew one thing for certain—
In a world that had taken so much…
he had helped give something back.
