He Refused to Let Him Go

The apartment was already filled with smoke when firefighter Andrew Klein rushed inside, searching for anyone still trapped.
Room by room, he pushed forward through the heat and darkness—until he found him.
A small dog, lying motionless just feet from the fire.
No movement.
No breath.
No pulse.
“He was totally lifeless,” Klein later said.
But walking away was never an option.

Without hesitation, he scooped the tiny body into his arms and ran out of the burning apartment. Time was everything—especially for a 15-pound dog who had already lost so much air.
Outside, the dog’s owner, Crystal Lamirande, was on her knees, overwhelmed and helpless. She had tried to save him herself, but the smoke was too thick. Now, all she could do was watch and hope.
Klein and his team got to work immediately.
Oxygen.
CPR.
Mouth-to-snout breaths.
Minute after minute passed.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Twenty minutes.
Still, they didn’t stop.
Because sometimes, saving a life means refusing to give up—even when it seems too late.
And then… something changed.
A breath.
A small movement.
Life.
The little dog, Nalu, began breathing on his own again. Slowly, he regained consciousness. Soon after, he was even able to stand and walk.
From lifeless… to alive.

Nalu later spent a full day recovering in an oxygen chamber, growing stronger with every hour. And before long, he was almost back to his normal self—as if he had been given a second chance at life.
His owner could hardly believe it.
She thanked the firefighter again and again, still in awe of what had happened. Not just that her dog survived—but that someone cared enough to fight for him for so long.
Because in that moment, Nalu wasn’t “just a dog.”
He was family.
And thanks to one man who refused to give up…
he got to go home.
