300 Feet Down… and Still Holding On

On New Year’s Day 2024, what began as a peaceful hike turned into a nightmare at Ecola State Park.

Alexa Fery and her fiancé Cody had brought along their 3-year-old golden retriever, Leo. He was happy, energetic—running ahead on the trail like he always did.

Then… he disappeared.

Moments later, they reached the edge.

A nearly vertical drop.

300 feet down.

Far below, on a narrow strip of rocky beach beside the Pacific Ocean, Leo lay motionless—injured, bleeding… and completely unreachable.

And the tide was rising.

They could only watch.

Three fire departments rushed in, preparing for a dangerous rope descent. But the cliff was too steep. The light was fading. One wrong move could cost another life.

They needed something faster.

Something precise.

That’s when the United States Coast Guard arrived.

A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria roared over the waves, cutting through the wind and crashing surf below.

A rescue swimmer was lowered into the chaos.

He dropped into the cold ocean, then pushed forward through the water toward the rocks—toward Leo.

No one knew how the injured dog would react.

Pain. Fear. Instinct.

But when the rescuer reached him…

Leo didn’t move.

He didn’t growl.

He didn’t resist.

The battered dog simply lay there… trusting a stranger in his most vulnerable moment.

Gently, the swimmer secured him into a rescue basket.

Then, together—

They rose.

Man and dog lifted into the sky, away from the rocks, away from the rising tide… away from what could have been the end.

When they landed, Leo’s family was waiting.

Alexa Fery ran forward, wrapping him in a blanket—then, without hesitation, pulled both her dog and the rescuer into a tearful embrace.

Over the radio, one pilot said softly:

“Hugs all around… love it.”

Leo had survived the impossible.

A 300-foot fall.
A collapsed lung.
A broken jaw.
And the ocean closing in.

Three days later…

He went home.

Safe.

Because sometimes, even at the edge of everything…

Hope still finds a way down.
