🐾❄️ Frozen Rescue: Black Lab Saved After Falling Through Ice on Cedar Lake

A frightening afternoon on a frozen lake turned into a story of relief and gratitude after a beloved family dog was rescued from icy waters in Georgetown Township.

The dog, a black Labrador Retriever named Hazel, had fallen through a thin layer of ice on Cedar Lake East, leaving her struggling in the freezing water.

🚨 A Dangerous Situation

Around 1:40 PM, the Georgetown Township Fire Department responded to a rescue call from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department after Hazel’s owner tried—but was unable—to pull her from the icy lake.

When rescuers arrived, the situation was urgent. Hazel had been fighting to stay afloat and was growing weaker in the freezing conditions.

🧊 Brave Rescuers Enter the Water

Members of the township’s dive team quickly suited up with surface rescue suits and ropes before carefully moving onto the unstable ice. With precision and teamwork, they reached the exhausted dog and pulled her safely back to shore.

According to Fire Chief Matt DeWitt, Hazel was barely holding on when rescuers arrived.

“The dog was extremely exhausted and had ice forming on its face and nose when we arrived,” he explained.

❤️ A Happy Reunion

Thankfully, Hazel survived the ordeal and was quickly reunited with her relieved owner. The fire department later reported that the dog is recovering well, and no rescuers were injured during the operation.

Chief DeWitt also issued an important reminder to the community: fresh snowfall can hide weak or thin ice, making frozen lakes especially dangerous for pets and children who might mistake them for solid ground.

✨ Thanks to the quick action of local rescuers, what could have been a tragedy became a heartwarming reunion—proving once again that courage and teamwork can save lives, even the four-legged ones. 🐶❄️
