On the calm surface of the ocean, a heartwarming scene unfolds between a mother sea otter and her tiny pup. Floating gently on her back, the mother drifts peacefully with the rhythm of the water. Resting comfortably on her chest is her small baby, curled into a soft ball of fur and sound asleep. The pup presses closely against its mother’s body, using her as both a warm blanket and a safe resting place. From a distance, the two almost look like a single floating shape, moving slowly with the waves.
For sea otter pups, staying close to their mothers is essential. Unlike many marine mammals, newborn sea otters cannot dive or swim well right away. Instead, they spend much of their early life floating on the surface while their mothers care for them.
Mother sea otters are incredibly attentive. They groom their pups frequently to keep their fur clean and fluffy, which helps maintain the insulation that keeps them warm in cold ocean water. When mothers need to dive for food, they sometimes wrap their babies in kelp so they don’t drift away.
