The Caretakers Behind Punch’s Happiness

Behind the growing confidence of little Punch are two people who have quietly dedicated their time and care to him: Kosuke Shikano and Shumpei Miyakoshi.

Working at Ichikawa City Zoo, the two caretakers have played an important role in helping the young Japanese macaque grow stronger and more confident.

From the beginning, Punch needed patience.

Without the comfort of a mother, the tiny monkey had to learn about trust in a different way. Day by day, through gentle care and calm presence, Shikano and Miyakoshi helped him feel safe enough to explore the world around him.

Their approach was simple but powerful: patience, kindness, and consistency.

“He’s just a little monkey, but he deserves the world,” they once said.

And it shows.

Watching Punch slowly place his trust in them—climbing nearby, observing them closely, and feeling safe in their presence—reminds many people that real care is not rushed.

Sometimes, the strongest bonds are built quietly, through small daily moments of patience and compassion.

Punch’s journey is not only about a little monkey finding his place in the world… it’s also about the people whose kindness helped make that possible.
