When a young macaque first arrived at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Ichikawa, Japan, he struggled to connect with the others in the troop.

Most days, he sat quietly by himself, holding a small toy the caretakers had given him for comfort. While the other monkeys played and moved together, the little one stayed apart, unsure where he belonged.

Then one day, something gentle happened.

An older monkey slowly approached him.

Instead of pushing him away, the older monkey simply sat down beside him.

Minutes passed in silence.

Then, softly, the older monkey wrapped an arm around the little one.

From that moment on, they were rarely seen apart. They groomed each other, rested side by side, and quietly moved through the enclosure together.

Sometimes the ones who have known loneliness the longest are the first to recognize it in someone else.
