When a young macaque first arrived at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Ichikawa, Japan, he struggled to connect with the others in the troop.

Most days, he sat quietly by himself, holding a small toy the caretakers had given him for comfort. While the other monkeys moved and played together, the little one stayed apart, unsure of where he belonged.

Then one day, something gentle happened.

An older monkey slowly approached him.

Instead of pushing him away or ignoring him, the older monkey simply sat down beside the small one.

Minutes passed in silence.

Then, softly, the older monkey wrapped an arm around him.

From that moment on, the two were rarely seen apart. They groomed each other, rested side by side, and moved through the enclosure together like quiet companions.

Sometimes those who have known loneliness the longest are the first to recognize it in someone else.
