And in the middle of it all, on a tiny patch of land barely above the rising water, stood a terrified puppy.

Most people looking at the scene would have said the same thing: it was simply too dangerous.

But Patrick Hiroshi Ospina Orihuela didn’t see it that way.

At 33 years old, he was a National Police of Peru non-commissioned officer and also a volunteer firefighter. For him, stepping into danger to help others wasn’t unusual—it was part of who he was.

When he saw that small life stranded in the middle of the raging river, he didn’t see “just a dog.”

He saw a life that had no way to save itself.

So he went in.

Tied to a safety rope, Patrick fought against the current, slowly making his way across the violent water toward the tiny island. The river pushed hard against him with every step. One wrong movement could send him under.

But he kept going.

At last, he reached the puppy.

As he leaned down to grab the frightened animal, he had to loosen his grip on the safety line for just a moment to reach him properly.

The puppy, terrified and confused by the chaos around him, slipped away.

The tiny body lost its footing and fell straight into the rushing current.
