The Man Who Became Home for Punch

At the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden, a tiny Japanese macaque named Punch begins each day with a quiet sense of comfort. No matter what happens, he knows he is no longer alone. Someone is always there beside him, patiently making sure his small world feels safe again.

Punch’s life, however, did not begin this way. When he was born, his story started with heartbreak. His mother rejected him shortly after birth, leaving the fragile baby monkey without the warmth and protection every newborn normally receives. For a macaque infant, that bond is everything. Without it, survival becomes uncertain.
But one person stepped in when Punch needed it most—his caretaker, Kosuke Shikano.

Without hesitation, Shikano began raising the tiny monkey by hand. The frightened baby needed more than food and shelter; he needed comfort. So Shikano gave him something simple—a soft, fluffy blanket.
To Punch, that blanket quickly became a lifeline. It was warm, gentle, and always there when the world felt overwhelming. The little monkey clung to it tightly, curling into it whenever he felt scared or unsure. 🧸

But caring for Punch is about far more than just keeping him warm. Every day, Shikano carefully monitors his health, feeds him, and patiently guides him through a routine that helps him grow stronger and more confident. Slowly, step by step, he also helps Punch build the courage to interact with other monkeys.
The photos that people around the world adore—the tiny monkey hugging his blanket, the quiet moments of tenderness—are only a small glimpse of the devotion behind the scenes. Those images exist because someone chose to give his time, patience, and compassion to a life that once felt abandoned.

For Punch, learning to trust again may be the greatest journey of all. And thanks to the person who never gave up on him, that journey now feels possible.
Because sometimes, home isn’t a place.
Sometimes home is simply the person who stays.
