Among the many strange creatures living in the deep ocean, few are as famous as the Blobfish. With its droopy face and soft body, it has gained worldwide attention and was even voted the ugliest animal in the world.

However, this strange appearance tells only part of the story.

A life deep under the ocean

Blobfish live at depths of 600 to 1,200 meters (2,000–4,000 feet) below the ocean surface, mainly off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. At these depths, the pressure is extremely high—dozens of times greater than at sea level.

Because of this environment, blobfish have developed a very unusual body structure.

A body designed for deep-sea survival

Unlike most fish, blobfish do not have a typical swim bladder or strong muscles. Instead, their bodies are made of a gelatinous mass slightly less dense than water, which allows them to float just above the sea floor without using much energy.

This adaptation helps them conserve energy in an environment where food can be scarce.

Why they look so strange

In their natural deep-sea habitat, blobfish actually look much more like a normal fish.
Their famous “melting” appearance usually happens when they are brought to the surface.

The sudden drop in pressure causes their bodies to collapse, creating the soft, drooping shape that people often see in photographs.

A misunderstood creature

Because of these images, the blobfish has become a symbol of strange and unusual wildlife. But in reality, it is simply an animal perfectly adapted to survive in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

While the blobfish may look odd to us, it is a reminder of how diverse and surprising life in the ocean can be.
