When a Glass Door Turns Friendly Dogs Into Rivals
In a quiet neighborhood, two dogs who are normally good friends have developed a surprisingly dramatic routine — and the unlikely cause appears to be a simple sliding glass door.
Under normal circumstances, the small dog and the neighbor’s larger dog get along perfectly. When they meet outside, they greet each other like old pals: sniffing, wagging their tails, and behaving in a relaxed and friendly way. There is no sign of tension between them. Anyone watching would assume they have always been comfortable around each other.

However, everything changes the moment a glass door separates them.
When the small dog stands inside the house and the neighbor’s dog approaches from outside, the mood instantly shifts. The small dog jumps up against the glass, barking and growling as if it is bravely defending the entire house. On the other side, the bigger dog presses close to the door and responds with its own deep growls, almost as if it has accepted a challenge.
To anyone watching, it looks like the beginning of a serious standoff.

But the moment the door slides open, the entire scene collapses. The barking stops, the growls disappear, and both dogs suddenly seem confused — as if they’ve forgotten why they were angry in the first place. Within seconds, they return to their normal calm behavior.
Animal behavior experts often explain that barriers like fences, windows, or glass doors can create what is known as “barrier frustration.” Dogs may react more aggressively when they can see another dog but cannot physically interact with it.
In this case, the two dogs aren’t really enemies at all. The true troublemaker may simply be the glass door standing between them.
